Loughner's competency can be restored, psychologist says – USATODAY.com: TUCSON, Ariz. -- A psychologist says the man accused of wounding Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in a deadly shooting rampage is still delusional, but she believes he can be restored to competency after another eight months of treatment."Dr. Christina Pietz testified Wednesday at a hearing on the mental status of 23-year-old Jared Lee Loughner. She has been treating Loughner at a Springfield, Mo., prison hospital.
Pietz says Loughner, who is being forcibly medicated, remains on suicide watch but is no longer having auditory hallucinations. She says she has no reason to think he won't keep getting better."
he might have been ape-shit crazy, delusional, schizo, hallucinating, and otherwise totally off the hook when he went on his notorious rampage -- after months of frightening and disturbing behavior in the community -- but that doesn't mean he can't be made well enough to be tried and executed for his crimes.
the good doctor believes that if they continue to pump loughner full of powerful anti-psychotic medications and other mind- and mood-altering chemicals, they can make the man shut up, sit still and otherwise refrain from acting like an extremely agitated, caged animal.
so long as he can be made docile enough not to interfere with the prosecution's case against him -- not necessarily assist in his own defense, but not make a defense impossible -- then the state can easily obtain a conviction and proceed to pump him full other other drugs that will make him permanently shut and and be still.
